The secret of life lies in the infinitesimally low probability of a basis of carbon compounds, liquid water and oxygen developing into something endowed with intelligence and consciousness: a closed system which maintains itself, endowed with a metabolism and the ability to reproduce.

The composer Simon Rummel and sculptor Vera Lossau have reworked an installation previously exhibited at the Kunstverein Duisburg in 2013, now entitled The Secret of Life. Organically shaped resonating bodies are framed in black and suspended freely throughout the space, each with a crank allowing these instrumental sculptures to be played. The felt hammers of a piano’s action meet taut strings, which also serve to keep the object in its frame and transfer acoustic reverberations to it.

Throughout the room, there are individual bodies which form a unit within the sonic space. The secret of life is not revealed here, but it is visualized and symbolized in some way.
