ACHT BRÜCKEN

Anyone keeping their seat at the Theater am Tanzbrunnen will be taken from the acoustic astrophysics of Gérard Grisey directly to the metaphysics of Karlheinz Stockhausen – from the depth of space-time to the mythical pinnacles of LICHT (Light), the monumental 29-hour opera cycle in praise of the day, every day, from Monday to Sunday.
The work performed here is FREITAGS-GRUSS (Friday Greeting), with the almost programmatic subtitle Weltraum (Space), a piece of purely electronic music which serves as a prelude to the staged opera action pertaining to the fifth day of the week. Presumably, unlocking the complex, multi-encoded overall structure of the mammoth work through this very short excerpt alone is quite impossible. However – as always in Stockhausen’s case – every aspect of his composition rivets the listener with the pervasive spiritual breath of his comprehensive, all-embracing musicality. An extra-sensory experience.
