Whereas LICHT was dedicated to the seven days of the week, Klang (Sound) encompasses the 24 hours of the day. Whether measured in the periodic rhythms of days, weeks, months or years, all human perception of time is based on the mechanics of heaven. For his ideal of a composition, Karlheinz Stockhausen liked to refer to the model of the solar system, an idea he tried to implement in very concrete fashion in COSMIC PULSES. This piece occupies the 13th position in the unfinished KLANG cycle. In this central position, it mirrors the 24-part overall construction and exposes the musical material for all the following hourly episodes. 24 sound layers constructed of melodic loops are superimposed upon one another – according to the composer’s own description, they were inspired by a group of planets rotating around one central force field, each at its own speed and rotational frequency, yet all minutely interrelated as parts of one order which self-creates from sonic motion. A musical cosmogenesis.
