The name of this quartet, Schmid’s Huhn, indicates that it is a joint project of the two saxophone players Stefan Karl Schmid and Leonard Huhn, both based in Cologne. Although it includes no harmony instrument, the quartet’s style veers towards the formal and structural experiments of Cool and West Coast Jazz of the 1950s, while employing unusual playing techniques and the expressivity of American-style Free Jazz to create current, improvised music that is entirely of the present moment.
It is Schmid’s equally fleet, supple and powerful tenor saxophone tone which merges as if of its own volition with Huhn’s expressively charged alto saxophone lines, while Stefan Schönegg’s bass and Fabian Arend’s percussion oscillate masterfully between precise beats and fluttering pulses, charging the complex Modern Jazz of Schmid’s Huhn with tension.
