ACHT BRÜCKEN

How could Gérard Grisey be omitted from the programme of this festival? With scientific meticulousness, the Frenchman stripped music to its elementary particles, deriving the laws of larger form from the structure of its smallest parts. He invaded the innermost of sound, placing the spectrum of overtones and their initial and final sounds under a microscope, only to then make them audible, enlarged to macroscopic dimensions. As the co-founder of spectral music confessed, he worked “… not with notes, but with tones”, in keeping with the tradition founded by his teacher Olivier Messiaen. Les espaces acoustiques is considered one of his central works. The six-part cycle begins with an extensive viola solo and builds up to all imaginable nuances of a rich, high-volume orchestral sound. Music as an organism which germinates, differentiates and finally dies in the last tone, “animated by an inner breath” pulsing through the composition. An odyssey in sonar space.
