The accordion is generally associated with folk music rather than art music, and Georges Aperghis never intended to negate its rustic character entirely. In his concerto, the solo instrument moves through the grand symphonic world like a stranger, occasionally taken by the hand by its more respectable relative, the organ. The organ, in turn, also plays parkour an important role in Anton Bruckner’s symphonic oeuvre, even when it is not heard: as a model for the sacred, festive atmosphere of some of the composer’s work, but especially for the registration of the sound colours and the grandiose effect of this music in space.
