A line may be contorted like a well-cooked spaghetti noodle, a plane like a piece of paper. Where, however, does space curve when it does? In order to understand this, one would have to observe it from the outside, yet we cannot change the fact that we are sitting in the midst of it. Curved Spaces – the title chosen by Caspar Johannes Walter leads us into the realms of non-Euclidian geometry and the general theory of relativity, of higher dimensions and black holes. A metaphor, certainly, but possibly an apposite one: why shouldn’t there be similarly confusing and strange phenomena in music as in mathematics and cosmology? Similarly fascinating challenges to our abilities of perception and insight? Walter’s comment on his work speaks of harmonies outside the dodecaphonic, tempered sound-space, of multiform sound-streams and infinite fields of glissandi, of flow velocity and conflicting forces. “The spaces within which the piece moves are never entirely determined. They merge and converge, often seeming as if the rug had been pulled out from beneath them.”
