A native of Aachen, Albrecht Maurer studied in Cologne and has participated in innumerable Early and New Music, jazz and classical projects as a string player. He is a gifted improviser, which makes him the equal and soul mate of his colleague Bassem Hawar. The Iraqi plays the djoze, one of the oldest string instruments known to mankind, a kind of knee-held violin with an impressive range of registers, enabling the duo to combine European harmonics with the scales of Arabic folklore. Eight bridges are enough to overcome the distance between Cologne and Bagdad, travelling from the Rhine to the Euphrates and Tigris.
