Born in Palermo in 1947, Salvatore Sciarrino drew upon the long tradition of Western music for impulses for his compositions, turning his back on the aesthetic mainstream early on. Since the second half of the 1960s, the self-taught artist has developed a style which repeatedly took his musical material to the limits of perception. Finely nuanced sounds, extensive moments of silence, but also noise-like, piercing eruptions of sound alternate in his music – a musical idiom that avoids being unambiguous and palpable, that produces fleeting images and highly, virtuosically differentiated soundscapes through subtle nuances of colour and filigreed, fragmentary figures. "Playing this music," Sciarrino explained, "means first and foremost rediscovering the power of suggestiveness. The music takes us to the threshold of silence, where our ear is sharpened and the spirit opens up to any sound event. Thereby, perception is renewed and listening becomes an emotional experience."
