ACHT BRÜCKEN

Speaking objectively, music is nothing but time made audible – regarding its proportions and rhythms, and even the pitch of each single note. Our perception of music, however, is a highly subjective thing. How does it change with the passing of time, and how does music, conversely, influence our perception of time? These are questions the Austrian Klaus Lang explores in his piece bright darkness.

Three (female) composers, three commissions – and three different, deep insights into the work on pieces which may relate to the 2020 festival’s “Cosmos” theme, but do not have to. Of Mirela Ivičević, all we know is that she generally likes to explore the subversive potential of sounds, collaging fragments of reality into alternative, surreal worlds. Vasiliki Krimitza, on the other hand, can already pinpoint ideas and impressions which have accompanied the conception of her work: thoughts from Rilke’s Notes on the Melody of Things, Goya’s painting Saturn Devouring one of his Children, or the galaxy W2246-0526, which is currently "cannibalizing" its neighbours. Annesley Black's title “orrery songs” refers to a gear-driven apparatus which illustrates the planets’ orbit around the sun. A similar machine, constructed especially for this occasion, will be involved in the world premiere, alongside the human protagonists.
