ACHT BRÜCKEN

The »Winterreise« becomes »The Cold Trip«: the Austrian Bernhard Lang transforms Franz Schubert’s self-described »cycle of blood-curdling songs« into sober English and also overwrites the original music with sounds of our times. He repeats central Schubert motifs as if using a loop machine, employing different extended guitar and singing techniques in every song. A daring mix of styles, offering fascinating insights into the mental abysses of these poems.

When experiments cannot be reproduced and the credibility of science is therefore called into question, this is called a »replication crisis«. The Israeli Yair Klartag used the term as the title of his new guitar quartet, which was also inspired by Samuel Beckett’s »Watt«. As in this novel, in the music the same actions also lead to ever-different results.

The programme of the Cologne Guitar Quartet is rounded out by a new work by the young composer Nicolas Berge from Cologne.
