ACHT BRÜCKEN

For many, this is a festival highlight: a stroll through the work of one of the most important composers of the 20th century. An artist who, despite cultish popularity during his lifetime, has probably not yet been duly assessed in terms of his meaning and effect on the further course of music history, even a quarter-century after his death. Frank Zappa was a multi-talent, an artist of universal orientation, while also a painstaking perfectionist and control freak who could drive his band colleagues to distraction and notated his scores with a degree of detail that nearly rendered them unplayable. His roots were in rhythm’n’blues, his idols John Lee Hooker and Johnny "Guitar" Watson; he had a weakness for doo-wop, rock’n’roll and jazz. On this basis, he advanced towards the European avant-garde, from Edgar Varèse and Igor Stravinsky to Pierre Boulez, Mauricio Kagel and Karlheinz Stockhausen. All of which is audible in this concert by Studio Dan.
