The title Ernst Busch – Der letzte Prolet raises questions in several respects. "Prolet," or prole, is considered an insult today, signifying a lack of culture rather than a lack of income and wealth. During the Weimar Republic, when the actor and singer Ernst Busch, a toolmaker by trade, rose to become an icon of socialism and anti-fascism, the epithet was considered a mark of nobility among a working and lower class that had attained political self-confidence. In this sense, the question is why Busch is supposed to have been the last of his kind. The historian and Busch biographer Jochen Voit offers convincing answers: blunt, direct and controversial, but always catchy and highly entertaining. Observations of history in a musical comic-strip format. The Stuttgart-based ensemble ascolta and singer Justin Caulley offer the Cologne premiere of this project, choosing texts by Voit and image sequences by Sophia Hirsch as their point of departure, with music by Gordon Kampe. A portrait? An homage? A graphic novel! With music.
